Overwatch's New Tank Hero Hazard: Love Him or Hate Him?

Approaching this one with caution

As a seasoned tank main in Overwatch, I've eagerly awaited each new hero, hoping for a fresh addition to the roster that would reinvigorate my gameplay. Enter Hazard, the latest tank hero, who, despite his Scottish charm, has left me feeling more "meh" than motivated.

First Impressions: A Familiar Face

Hazard's design feels like Blizzard reached into the "Generic Action Hero" bin and pulled out a muscle-bound, abs-flashing, aggression-exuding character. It's as if they thought, "What if we combined Doomfist's dive mechanics with Mei's crowd control and sprinkled in a Scottish accent for flavor?" While I appreciate the cultural nod, the overall aesthetic feels uninspired.

Abilities Breakdown: Déjà Vu

  • Bonespur (Primary Fire): Fires a burst of spikes reminiscent of a shotgun. It is effective at close to mid-range but lacks the satisfying punch of other tank weapons.

  • Spike Guard (Secondary Fire): Blocks incoming damage from the front while retaliating with homing spikes and regenerating ammo. It's a defensive move that resembles a mix of Doomfist's block and Zarya's particle barrier.

  • Jagged Wall: Creates a spiky wall that damages and knocks back enemies. Think Mei's ice wall, but with added ouch.

  • Violent Leap: A jump attack that, when combined with a melee strike, delivers a slash upon landing. Doomfist's Seismic Slam meets Reinhardt's Charge but without the satisfying crunch.

  • Downpour (Ultimate): Rains down spikes in an area, damaging and immobilizing enemies. It's like a less flashy Meteor Strike with added crowd control.

Disrupting the Tank Meta

Hazard's hybrid dive-brawl playstyle introduces a new dynamic to tanking. His mobility allows for aggressive engagements, but his defensive tools require precise timing. This disrupts traditional tank roles, forcing teams to adapt to a hero who doesn't fit neatly into existing strategies.

Community Reactions: A Mixed Bag

Some players praise Hazard for making the tank role fun again, citing his high mobility and skill expression. One player noted, "His kit is insane; there's so much room for skill expression. This is legit Doomfist 2.0."

Others, like myself, find his mechanics reminiscent of heroes we're not particularly fond of. His appearance and playstyle feel like a rehash of existing concepts, leaving us yearning for something truly innovative.

Conclusion: A Hazardous Addition?

While Hazard brings a unique blend of offense and defense to the tank role, his similarities to existing heroes and clichéd design make it hard for me to embrace him fully. Perhaps with time and a few balance patches, he'll carve out a fresh and impactful niche. Until then, I'll be sticking with my tried-and-true tank picks, hoping the next hero brings something groundbreaking.
